One of the local thrift stores had a 50% sale today. And since the wife still hasn’t gone into full labor, we drove on down to see what they had to offer. I never made it past the shopping cart full of records by the door.

I was able to pick up 7 records for under $2. And such finds: Steely Dan’s “Aja” and “Katy Lied,” The Fabulous Thunderbirds’ “Butt Rockin’,” Mott the Hoople’s “Live” and “Rock and Roll Queen,” some random-ass compilation with fantastic cover art, and a version of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker.”

  • 06.25.06 An old fan. posted in geekery, thrifting

We spent yesterday (Saturday) morning tooling around town looking for decent yard sales and stopping by a few of the local antiqueries. We chanced upon an old Dominion fan which we presume to be from the 1960s or earlier. It didn’t run very well when we found it, but at $20, we bought it anyway.

First thing I did when we got it home was plug it in and try it out a second time. The blades spun slowly and in a jerky fashion. The motor looked pretty simple, so I figured that it was prolly just 40-50 years of dust and gunk that was interfering with the magnets. Soooo… I grabbed a screwdriver and some cleaning supplies and torn the puppy apart.

After an hour of scrubbing and cleaning all parts inside and out, I reassembled the little Dominion and plugged her back in. Now it works like a champ. It spins about 10 times faster than when we brought it home, and the once browned fan blades are now shiny silver again.
