Today was Easter. And Easter means bunnies and eggs. In Helena, it means there is a giant Easter-egg “hunt” on the lawn of the Capitol. It’s not so much a hunt as it is a lawn full of uncovered easter-eggs. Children by the masses line up at the lawn’s edge and wait for the announcer to say “Go!” Then there’s a mad dash of children and their helpful parents shoving other children and parents out of the way. It seems that a few eggs are marked with dollar amounts and can be redeemed for cash. It’s a good thing, too… because I can’t imagine any self-respecting 3-year-old going hog wild for a basket full of hard-boiled eggs. Plastic eggs filled with candy? Sure. But not hard-boiled eggs. Unless of course some young boy is aspiring to be the next Cool Hand Luke.
At any rate, we took Nora over to observe the craziness. She had never seen so many children gathered in one place. Her little head was a flurry of movement looking from left to right trying to take it all in. When everyone started dashing for the eggs, Nora started screeching with glee. I carried her into the fray and she was a constant flow of laughter. She may not have gotten an egg, but she surely had a good time.
